Break bulk ship is a ship that carries heavy,large,bales, boxes, and bundles of miscellaneous goods. Cargo ships are specialized in carrying various cargo tasks on the water, there are dry cargo ships and liquid cargo ships, and break bulk ships are a kind of dry cargo ships. Generally referred to as a 10,000-ton cargo ship, it means that its cargo capacity is about 10,000 tons or more than 10,000 tons, and its total deadweight and full load displacement are much larger.
Break bulk ships are generally double-deck ships, with 4 to 6 cargo holds, and cargo hatches on the deck of each cargo hold, and cargo rods that can lift 5 to 20 tons are installed on both sides of the cargo hold. Some ships also have heavy cranes to lift heavy cargo, lifting capacity of 60 to 250 tons. Cargo ships with special requirements are equipped with huge V-shaped lifting booms that can lift hundreds of tons. In order to improve the efficiency of loading and unloading, some cargo ships are equipped with rotary cargo cranes.
Also developed is a multi-purpose dry cargo ship, which can carry general packaged groceries, but also can carry bulk and containerized cargo. This kind of cargo ship is more suitable and efficient than the general cargo ship which carries a single cargo.
Break bulk ships are widely used and rank first in the total tonnage of the world's merchant fleet. The tonnage of general cargo ships sailing in inland waters has hundreds of tons, thousands of tons, and the general cargo ships in ocean transportation can reach more than 20,000 tons. General cargo ships are required to have good economy and safety, without having to pursue high speed. General cargo ships usually sail in ports according to the specific conditions of cargo sources and cargo needs, with fixed shipping dates and routes. The general cargo ship has a strong longitudinal structure, the bottom of the hull is mostly double-layer structure, the bow and stern are equipped with front and rear peak tanks, which can be used to store fresh water or load ballast water to adjust the trim of the ship, and can prevent seawater from entering the large tank when it is collided. There are 2 ~ 3 decks above the hull, and several cargo holds are set up, and the hatches are covered with watertight hatches to avoid water. The engine room or arranged in the middle or arranged in the tail, each has advantages and disadvantages, arranged in the middle can adjust the trim of the hull, in the rear is conducive to the arrangement of cargo space. Cargo lift rods are provided on both sides of the hatch. For loading and unloading of heavy parts, it is usually equipped with heavy derrick. In order to improve the good adaptability of break bulk ships to various cargo transportation, can carry large cargo, heavy equipment,containers, groceries, and some bulk cargo, modern new break bulk ships are often designed as multi-purpose ships.
